What are Spots?

Spots are one side of acne, which affects almost 95% of the western adolescent population.

Therefore, do not worry, you are not alone! In addition, getting rid of spots does not have
to be a complicated issue. Firstly, let us try to understand what spots are. Whilst there is no
major difference between spots and acne, some people classify spots as a few breakouts in
the skin and acne as more widespread, on the face, chest, back and shoulders.

A spot is the blockage of the sebaceous gland, which is located on the surface of the skin.
These glands secrete a substance called sebum, an oily substance that lubricates the hair
follicle. Occasionally these glands are blocked by excess sebum, which mixes with dead skin
cells at the opening of the gland, causing blackheads. If bacteria works its way into the skin,
into the blocked gland, the area becomes red, swollen and produces a white pus, resulting
in whiteheads.

Spots are usually caused by hormonal changes such as those that occur during puberty,
periods or pregnancy. Spot breakouts are also linked to stress, since stress can trigger
fluctuations in hormone levels. This is why we always tend to suffer a breakout prior to a
big event! However, upon reading this article, you will be equipped to better handle your
additional stress, as you will be enlightened on getting rid of spots.

Treatment for Getting Rid of Spots

There are several over-the-counter (OTC) products available today, that can effectively
treat spots. However, a severe outbreak may require you to consult a GP or dermatologist
for stronger prescriptions such as a topical antibiotic or product containing benzoyl peroxide,
which has a gentle drying and peeling effect on the skin.

Also, there are natural treatments for getting rid of spots that are cost-effective and easy
to use. Tea tree oil is an excellent anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment. Dilute
it with a bit of water first (it is highly concentrated and could irritate your skin) and apply
it very sparingly to the affected spot. Rosewater is also naturally anti-inflammatory. The
added benefit of it is that its aroma has been used for centuries to uplift spirits and ease
stress and tension.

It is always advisable to consult a profession if you tend to frequently suffer from spots,
especially around the mouth and chin. If you are a female suffering from facial hair and
infrequent periods, there is a chance that the underlying cause of your spots could be
polycystic ovary syndrome.

Always remember that, as tempting as it may seem, squeezing spots can make things
worse. Squeezing tends to drive bacteria deeper into the skin and in some cases cause scarring.

Some experts note that if the spot has come to a prominent white head, squeezing is an
effective way to getting rid of spots. However, make sure your hands are very clean and
wrap your nails in tissue to prevent your nails from damaging your skin. To ensure the area
stays clean, apply a little tea tree oil or antiseptic cream on top of the squeezed spot.
